Birthdays are always special. A time for friends, family and togetherness. What’s more is that you generally get to eat all your favourite stuff. My mother generally makes me her special biryani which I am specially fond of. My pet parrot used to prefer chillis though!
Well, Bodega Cantina-Y-Bar or Bodega as we fondly call our favourite restaurant is turning one. And for a change it is serving up all that is special to the chefs and bartender(s) of Bodega.
There’s the pita pocket full of minced lamb. Rich, meaty and full of flavour and the best part is the use of pomegranate on top which adds a very unique freshness to the dish.
The Korean Beef goyza is sure to appeal to the momo lovers of the city. Another meaty dish extremely well complimented by the beautiful sweet chilli dipping sauce.
But my favourites of the evening were the tacos. Both the Baja fish taco and the Chilly tacos were beautiful, flavoursome and fresh. Loved the use of melons, the hint of lime and just the right amount of gooeyness.
The mains have two great dishes (there is a great picture of us polishing off the food. Will share that with you as soon as I get hold of it from chef Sagar). The Thai Basil Chicken with sticky rice with sunny side up and chicken was one. Be sure to break the sunny side up and mix it with the sticky rice to land up in taste bud heaven. The spicy chicken is the perfect pairing to the rice.
The Chicken three ways is as beautiful a dish as you would come across in the city. The perfectly cooked Chicken roulade, the melt in your mouth confit chicken and the crisp (as crispy as bacon!) chicken wings along with the perfect jus and garlic mash is the treatment of choice for your weekday blues.
And if you are reading this for alcohol then you would be blown away to know that Bodega has become the first place in Kolkata to serve up the pickleback (a shot chased by a pickle based drink), but instead of the traditional whiskey, Bodega is serving up a tequila version and boy is it great! (It is a shot for Christ’s sake! Why are you still looking for a picture?). The picture above is of Cumpleanos Coctel ( Birthday Drink), a perfect concoction of gin/vodka with yuzu bitters and fresh lemony flavours to make Bodega’s birthday and your evening all the more special.
But behind all this food and drink and menu launches, we must raise up our glasses and toast a restaurant which is slowly changing the dining scene of a city full of Chinese and Biryani houses. Hats off to you Bodega. Have a great birthday.
